Snapchat draws your profile photo as a circle on your profile and in many lists and threads. A rectangular group shot or a Story still will lose corners and often the wrong detail.
Upload a true square. 1080×1080 usually looks sharp after Snapchat scales the image; 640×640 is a solid lighter option when the source is already soft. Soft tiny files stay soft—do not expect magic from an upscale.

Design for the circle, not the square
You upload a square, but viewers almost never see the corners. Anything important in those corners is gone. Place the face or mark in the center and leave a little padding so the circle does not clip ears, hair, or logo edges awkwardly.
Friend lists and chat threads shrink the same file to a tiny disc. If someone cannot recognize you at that size, tighten the crop—do not add more detail to the corners.
