Bluesky banners are wider than most “header” exports

Your Bluesky profile shows a very wide header—commonly around 3000×1000 (3:1). Desktop may show more of the strip; phones often tighten the sides. A logo only on the far left or right can vanish for mobile viewers.

Correct pixels keep the graphic sharp after clients compress the upload. Soft, noisy, or heavily upscaled files look muddy next to a crisp avatar. Export a true 3:1 frame instead of stretching an X 1500×500 or a Discord 960×540 banner.

Creators reuse Twitter headers here all the time because both are 3:1—but Bluesky’s typical pixel count is much larger. Upscaling a soft 1500×500 into 3000×1000 does not add detail. Start from a high-resolution master when you can.

Treat the banner like a billboard behind your circular avatar: short headline, clear subject, calm far edges. Timeline posts are a separate ~16:9 job—do not force this export into the feed.

Good vs weak crop

Same LinkedIn-style banner—quiet lower-left for the avatar, subject in the open mid/right band.

Reads across desktop and phone

  • Subject centered in the safe band
  • Short headline in the clear horizontal area
  • Quiet far edges for mobile trim
  • True 3:1 export from a sharp master

Lost at the edges

  • Only branding on the extreme left or right
  • Tiny type stretched across the full width
  • Discord or LinkedIn cover stretched to 3:1
  • Soft upscale from a tiny source

Tick these off against your crop preview—nothing is saved.

Edge crop and mobile width

Wide banners lose side content on narrower screens. Treat the outer ~10% as atmospheric only: sky, blur, or soft brand color—not the only logo or a face.

Your avatar also sits with the header on the profile. Leave contrast so the circle still reads against the strip—especially if both are dark.

  • Keep faces, wordmarks, and product shots in the center band.
  • Leave far left and right quieter for side trim.
  • Check the live profile on a phone before you call the design done.
  • Pair mood with the avatar; export them as two files.

File requirements

Photos usually look best as JPG; hard-edged logos can stay PNG. Prefer sRGB. If 3000×1000 is huge for your connection, the lighter 1500×500 option keeps the same 3:1 framing.

X headers vs Bluesky banners

X headers are also 3:1 (1500×500), so the framing habit transfers—but pixel count differs. Upscaling a soft X export to 3000×1000 does not invent detail. Discord and LinkedIn use different ratios entirely.

  • Reuse the photo from X if you like; re-export at Bluesky’s pixel target when the master allows.
  • Do not stretch Discord 16:9 or LinkedIn 4:1 into 3:1.
  • If you need one campaign look, crop from a wide master per platform.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the only logo on the far left or right edge.
  • Packing tiny captions along the rim.
  • Using a soft upscale instead of a true high-resolution 3:1 export.
  • Uploading a timeline post (~16:9) as the header.
  • Matching banner colors so poorly that a dark avatar disappears.

How to use the crop tool

Upload a wide photo (or try the sample), choose Profile banner (3000×1000), drag until the subject clears the edge risk, then download. Processing stays in your browser.

  • Use the safe margin as a hard keep-in for logos and faces.
  • Prefer JPG for photos and PNG for crisp logos.
  • Switch to Lighter 3:1 if the file needs to stay small for mobile upload.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Bluesky banner size in 2026?

Around 3000×1000 pixels (3:1) is a typical profile banner target. Keep critical content centered; phones may trim the far edges.

Is Bluesky banner the same as X banner?

Both are often 3:1. X commonly uses 1500×500; Bluesky’s typical upload is larger at 3000×1000. Same framing habit, different pixel count.

Does Bluesky crop the banner on mobile?

You may see less width on phones. Keep logos and faces out of the rim, then preview on a real device after upload.

Can I use a Discord or LinkedIn banner?

Not without re-cropping. Discord (~16:9) and LinkedIn (4:1) are different ratios. Stretching them into 3:1 warps the image.

JPG or PNG for a Bluesky header?

JPG for photographs, PNG for hard-edged logos or flat type. Export sRGB and keep the file reasonably light when possible.

Should the banner match my profile picture?

Coordinate colors if you like, but export them as separate files. The avatar is a square circle crop; the banner is a 3:1 strip.

What if my photo is not 3000px wide?

Use the lighter 1500×500 3:1 option, or crop from the largest sharp master you have. Avoid upscaling noise just to hit 3000.
